Political scientist Arne Niemann appointed to Jean Monnet Chair

European recognition of teaching and research in the field of European integration

Professor Dr. Arne Niemann of the Institute of Political Science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has been awarded an EU Jean Monnet Chair for his achievements in teaching and research. Jean Monnet Chairs are reserved for professors specializing in the area of European integration studies and can be awarded by the European Commission to those working at institutes of higher education worldwide. A three-year stipend for teaching and research on European integration accompanies this prestigious award.

Niemann will be focusing on EU foreign relations in the next years as part of his Jean Monnet professorship. In addition to the promotion of teaching and research, further events are planned with the aim of enhancing the profile of the subject of European integration among the broader public. These will include a Jean Monnet lecture series with top guest speakers, regularly occurring panel discussions on current issues of European integration, a series of workshops as well as collaboration between schools and Mainz University in the form of a simulation game on the subject of EU enlargement.
