ShanghaiRanking's ARWU lists Physics at JGU among the 75 leading institutes of physics in the world and one of the top six in Germany

In the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), released by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the field of Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has again achieved excellent positions. Physics at JGU is ranked at positions 4-6 in Germany and in the top 75 of universities worldwide, thus rating high in comparison with leading universities throughout the world. Physics at Mainz University scored particularly well in terms of the number of articles published in the most important specialist journals as well as in the area of international joint projects.
The ShanghaiRanking's Academic Ranking of World Universities was first published in June 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Since 2009, ARWU has been published and copyrighted by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, which is a fully independent organization on higher education intelligence and not legally subordinated to any university or government agency. The aim of the ranking is to provide a comparison of the world’s 500 best universities. The ranking takes into consideration the number of academic publications, the number of citations, the number of Nobel Prizes awarded, and the size of the respective institutions.
