JGU honors exceptional personal commitment based on a sense of social responsibility

His tireless commitment effectively sets a course for the development of the University. At the 2011 DIES ACADEMICUS, Dr. h.c. Klaus G. Adam becomes honorary citizen of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). JGU thus honors the exceptional personal commitment and sense of social responsibility of the acting President of the Board of Trustees of the "Friends of Mainz University" and Chairman of the Johannes Gutenberg University Foundation. "This honor is bestowed to acknowledge and emphasize the many years of work that Dr. Klaus Adam provided in support of science and art at JGU, his personal contributions and advice to university committees in connection with reforms as well as his tireless efforts to obtain third-party funding for the University," said the President of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, University Professor Dr. Georg Krausch.
The former chairman of the State Bank of Rhineland-Palatinate in Mainz, Dr. h.c. Klaus G. Adam, has given his time and energy free of charge for many years to support science at JGU. Already in the 1990s, he was active on the Board of Trustees of the Friends of Mainz University. In 1996, JGU honored his efforts concerning the promotion of science and art with the Diether von Isenburg medal. Since then, Klaus G. Adam has continuously extended his commitment and his sensitivity to the concerns of JGU, supporting the University on its way towards reform.
"Dr. Klaus Adam has shown his excellent integration skills and his special closeness to JGU particularly as Chairman of the 'Friends of Mainz University' and Chairman of the Johannes Gutenberg University Foundation," continued the President of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, University Professor Dr. Georg Krausch. "He uses his excellent connections to business and the world of commerce to obtain financing for our University. His valuable contacts to the City of Mainz enable him to forge links between Mainz University and the citizens of Mainz in order to attract members for the "Friends" as well as the motivation of sponsors for the University Foundation."
Dr. Klaus Adam has worked with great dedication to ensure that the "Friends" would provide a donation of €250,000 on their 60th anniversary to build a "School of Vision" that will act as a forum for creativity in the humanities at JGU and support the efforts of JGU to extend the intellectual exchange between the University, the schools in the region as well as the citizens of Mainz and the entire region in a sustainable manner.
He is a business leader with multifunctional responsibilities, and has repeatedly provided visions and guidelines for the complex processes between university and society. This was rewarded in 2001, when Klaus G. Adam received an honorary doctorate in law and economics from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His fundamental scientific contributions to the basic questions of economic order, European currency policy and the German and European currency and credit system have always contributed to economic studies.
"I am aware of the importance of research and teaching. It was therefore a pleasure and an honor to accompany JGU over the last 20 years on its remarkable way to becoming one of the leading large German universities. Solid education increases the social mobility of individuals and secures the wealth of our society. This conviction led to my motto: lifelong learning with curiosity and joy," said Dr. Klaus Adam at the DIES ACADEMICUS award ceremony at Johannes Gutenberg University. "Becoming an honorary citizen of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is very special for me - it confirms my deep connection to JGU. However, noteworthy achievements are often the result of teamwork, for which I am obliged to several people."
Honorary citizenship of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is bestowed by the University to honor people with considerable achievements in science and art. Other honorary citizens of JGU are, among others, Otto Boehringer, former Federal Minister, Dr. Hans Friderichs, cabaret actor Hanns Dieter Hüsch, His Excellency Karl Cardinal Lehmann, Bishop of Mainz, and author Carl Zuckmayer.
