In international comparison, JGU is among the top 100 universities worldwide in Physics as well as in Pharmacology and Toxicology

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is ranked 15th out of the 71 German universities under review in the 2021 U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings and is rated as one of the top 100 European universities (91st out of almost 600 universities assessed). On the global level, JGU ranks 214th and is thus in the top 14 percent of the 1,500 listed universities. JGU is in the top five in two subjects at national level: in the field of Pharmacology/Toxicology it is ranked 2nd out of 14, in Physics it is ranked 5th out of 50. Mainz University is among the 100 best universities internationally in each subject.
JGU achieved very good results in the Regional Research Reputation category, in which it was ranked best in all of the subjects listed. A number of subjects reached the top 50 of 250 ranked universities: Immunology with rank 19, Pharmacology/Toxicology with rank 33, and Geosciences with rank 47.
The U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings have been published annually by the U.S. News & World Report media company since 2014. The international rankings of 1,748 research-led universities are based on analyses of publication data on the Web of Science research platform and on academic reputation surveys.
