Training center for students to help them acquire medical skills wins poster prize for its outstanding publicity concept

How do you make medical students aware of the existence of a Skills Lab when you only have limited means at your disposal? Using the 'Develop your skills' maxim, the student staff of the Skills Lab at the Mainz University Medical Center created a poster with a quick guide intended to attract maximum attention among the student body. At this year's Skills Lab Symposium, a conference for the German-speaking training centers for medical skills, three poster prizes were awarded, one of which went to the Mainz Skills Lab team.

"In the case of a student-run skills lab, such as that at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), the first important goal is to make other students aware of the largely optional opportunities on offer. The training courses provided at our Skills Lab have not yet been extensively integrated in the mandatory curriculum. In other words, students who attend courses at the Skills Lab are doing so voluntarily and are thus exhibiting a high level of commitment," said Professor Dr. Dr. Reinhard Urban, Chief Scientific Officer at the Mainz University Medical Center.

The jury praised the targeted publicity concept of the Mainz team "as especially helpful for the other participating skills labs." Justifying its decision, the jury said that the concept for the student training center in Mainz was "very clearly and creatively developed" and was thus an ideal "model to be imitated".
