In the most recent U-Multirank university ranking, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has achieved excellent results in several areas. This applies both to the ranking of the university as a whole and in respect of the disciplines under review.

U-Multirank was developed by a consortium of European higher education and research institutions. JGU took part in the 2019 ranking both at the university level and with regard to its Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics departments. The central feature of U-Multirank is that it does not publish standard ranking lists but assigns universities to one of five ranking groups for each key indicator.

JGU was ranked in the top group of participating universities for five key indicators in the areas of research and knowledge transfer. Mainz University is also among the leading group internationally, for example, when it comes to the number of its research publications and the number of patents it has been granted.

Excellent rankings were awarded not only to JGU as a whole, but also to individual disciplines. Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics were placed among the leading international group in terms of the amount of third-party funding raised relative to number of academic staff. In addition, four disciplines – Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Physics – scored well with regard to the proportion of doctoral degrees, relative to the number of academic staff. Overall, Chemistry was placed in the highest ranking group in terms of seven key indicators, Physics and Computer Science in six, Biology in five, and Mathematics in one key indicator.
