Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has scored exceptionally well in several areas in the current edition of U-Multirank, both in terms of the university’s standing in general and the disciplines under review.
U-Multirank was developed by a consortium of European higher education and research institutions. Mainz University was assessed in the 2020 ranking both at the level of the university as whole and with regard to the subjects of Business Studies, History, Political Science, and Economics. U-Multirank does not publish standard ranking lists but instead assigns universities to one of five ranking groups for each key indicator.
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz has been placed in the top group of participating universities for eight key indicators in the dimensions of research, knowledge transfer, and international orientation. For example, JGU is among the leading international group in terms of the number of research publications, third-party funding obtained, the number of patents, and the percentage of international academic staff.
Excellent rankings were awarded not only to JGU as a whole, but also to individual disciplines. Business Studies, History, Political Science, and Economics were placed among the leading international group in terms of the amount of third-party funding raised relative to the number of staff. Three subjects (Business Studies, History, and Economics) scored well with regard to the proportion of students obtaining doctorates. Overall, History was placed in the highest ranking group in the case of six key indicators, Economics in the case of five key indicators, and Business Studies and Political Science in the case of four key indicators.
